Topic: Rotating Equipment
FEATURE REPORTS

Summary: Regularly calibrated measurement instruments make a major contribution to successful plant operation. In many cases, they are decisive in controlling critical processes safely and without malfunctions. In order to ensure conformity and auditability, there are specific requirements for calibration processes. Special conditions arise depending on location and whether the calibration is carried out by the company's own personnel or by an external service provider. The traceability of the calibration is a central requirement in any case. Furthermore, the shortest possible downtimes are generally important, and the calibration process itself must be cost-optimized. This Feature Report presents an overview of calibration requirements, and discusses how to analyze the calibration process, which includes an inventory of the installed base.
Related equipment and services: All types of instruments, sensors and field devices, any type of equipment used for calibration, as well as calibration services
Relevant industries: All sectors of the chemical process industries (CPI) use instruments that require regular calibration.

Topic: Solids Handling
FEATURE REPORTS

Summary: Processes involving solid materials often present unique and complex challenges for process safety and effectiveness. This two-part Feature Report explores some of those challenges. Part 1 investigates filtration in solids processes, such as pneumatic conveying. Part 2 explores dust safety and mitigating the risks associated with static electric charges when dust is present.
Related equipment and services: All solids-handling equipment, including pneumatic conveying systems, hoppers, silos, bins, mechanical conveyers, spray dryers, cyclones, industrial baghouses and dust-control equipment
Relevant industries:  Anywhere solids are handled, either as a product or input to a process, including chemicals, specialty materials, food, pharmaceuticals, and others

Topic: Methane Reforming
NEWSFRONTS

Summary: With the availability of abundant and inexpensive natural gas, steam methane reforming continues to play an important role for the production of hydrogen and synthesis gas (syngas). Nevertheless, conventional steam methane reforming is energy intensive, and generates significant amounts of carbon dioxide. This Newsfront presents the latest developments in catalysts, reactor design and processes for reforming methane more efficiently.
Related equipment and services: Process technologies, catalysts, gas-cleaning technologies, CO2 scrubbing, and all the associated process equipment (pumps, valves, process-control systems, heat exchangers and much more)
Relevant industries: Industrial gases, petroleum refining, hydrogen production, ammonia and fertilizers production, methanol production, Fischer-Tropsch liquids and waxes

Topic: Modular Construction
NEWSFRONTS

Summary: In recent years, the concept of modular construction has grown from a few niche applications to considerably large process units in very large-scale production plants. This month's Equipment Newsfront looks at the progress in this growing field, and the benefits of going modular.
Related equipment and services:  All types of process equipment, modular plants and modular process units, engineering construction and design
Relevant industries: All sectors of the CPI are utilizing modular construction to some degree.

Topic: Polybutadiene Production
TECHNOLOGY PROFILE

Summary: Polybutadiene is a synthetic rubber made from 1,3-butadiene monomer. The polymer is widely used in vehicle tires, and as a component in toughened plastic copolymer materials. Most polybutadiene is made using a solution process, which is described in this one-page capsule.
Related equipment and services: Reactors, catalysts, pumps valves, sensors and others in a wide range of process equipment
Relevant industries: Polymers, rubbers, catalysts, automotive, materials

Focus: Gas Detection
FOCUS

Summary:  Gas detection is necessary for controlling processes, such as combustion and many types of chemical reactions, as well as for keeping plant workers and the environment safe from hazardous gases. This month's Focus presents the latest gas sensors and monitors for the chemical process industries.
Related equipment and services: All types of gas detectors, multi-gas sensors, gas monitors and so on
Relevant industries:  Most sectors of the CPI require gas detectors within their production plants.

Topic: Technologies for Controlling H2S
ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGER

Summary: Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a toxic and corrosive gas that occurs naturally, but can also be produced through many industrial processes, especially those where natural gas, syngas or biogas are being handled. During combustion, (H2S) is oxidized to sulfur dioxide, a highly regulated air pollutant which necessitates its removal before combustion. (H2S) removal is clearly important for the environment, industrial equipment integrity and human health. (H2S) can be removed from process gas through various technologies depending on the application, process conditions and removal requirements. This article will describe select proven technologies for controlling (H2S).
Related equipment and services:  Any type of technology or equipment used for pollution control, including columns, scrubbers, filtration systems, settling tanks, analyzers, activated carbon and more
Relevant industries:  Control of (H2S) is especially important in processes that handle natural gas or biogas, as well as waste-to-energy systems and wastewater treatment processes.

Topic: Top Model Communication
ENGINEERING PRACTICE

Summary: The role of mathematical models in chemical engineering keeps expanding, to the point that some engineers become specialized “modelers.” To best combine mathematical skills, domain expertise and usage conditions, communication and exchange between modelers and their engineer customers must be given the proper attention. Concrete guidelines are exemplified in this month's Engineering Practice article.
Related equipment and services:   Software for mathematical modeling, data analysis, simulations and process design
Relevant industries:  All CPI sectors use modeling to design and operate their processes
