Brunswick County Power Station
The 1,358-MW project is one of the largest and most efficient combined cycle projects in the world. The plant utilizes 3-on-1 combined cycle technology including three Mitsubishi M501GAC gas turbines, three GE/Alstom heat recovery steam generators, and Mitsubishi steam turbines. Fluor handled the engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning for the station, which was completed ahead of schedule and under budget.

EDF Bouchain
The Bouchain unit achieved the world’s record for most efficient combined cycle power plant (62.22% net efficiency). With GE’s first commercial HA gas turbine at its heart, the plant has the fastest combined cycle plant start-up (less than 25 minutes) enabling EDF to respond more quickly to the demands for power from intermittent sources of renewable energy. The plant’s heavy-duty gas turbine can also be turned down to less than 30% while still meeting emission requirements.

Paradise Combined Cycle Plant
Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), Kiewit, and their partners set a goal to design, procure, construct, and commission a state-of-the-art project on time and on budget, and in many ways, they exceeded that goal. The Paradise plant is the most-efficient gas plant in TVA’s fleet. Not only did the partnership produce a world-class project, it also created a positive impact on the local community by participating in a number of community service events and fundraisers.

Shakopee Energy Park
Located in Shakopee, Minnesota, the 46-MW facility uses fast-start, fuel-efficient Wärtsilä reciprocating engines to generate local, reliable power for the city as well as contributing to the overall power supply for 12 Minnesota Municipal Power Agency member communities. The plant uses liquefied natural gas as its back-up fuel source, allowing more flexibility in its operations strategy, and it utilizes efficient heat recovery technology to capture waste heat for various uses.

Center Peaker Plant
Southern California Edison put online the world’s first battery–gas turbine hybrid system, pioneering a new direction in the way power could be generated and stored. The LM6000 Hybrid Electric Gas Turbine integrates a 10-MW/4.3-MWh lithium-ion battery energy storage system supplied by GE’s energy technology arm Current and an existing 50-MW GE LM6000 aero-derivative gas turbine.

Grand River Energy Center
The Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS) M501J gas turbine at the Grand River Energy Center in Oklahoma was the first J-series gas turbine installed in the Americas and the first to be built at the Savannah Machinery Works in Georgia. It is paired in combined cycle with a steam turbine that was built at the MHPS Nagasaki Works in Japan. The unit also features a generator from Mitsubishi Electric Co. It sustained reliable power generation just 45 days after first fire.

Upgrading Boiler Feed Water Pumps for the Modern Power Plant
To address the need for cycling operation, the Fort St. Vrain power plant upgraded its boiler feed water pump internal seals (wear rings, center bushing, and throttle bushing) to a composite material with a new design and reduced clearance. The upgrade to the composite material has minimized the risk of pump seizure, making the pumps easier to operate. The reduced clearance and new design has led to a 9% efficiency gain as well as a 10% reduction in power consumption when the pump is operating at maximum flow.

Useful Thermal Insulation System Design Tips
Thermal insulation is mainly used to limit heat loss from hot surfaces and heat gain on cold surfaces. In addition, thermal insulation serves to provide condensation (anti-sweat) control, personnel protection, freeze protection, fire protection, noise control, and process control. Basic calculations associated with thermal insulation design are presented.

Ammonia-Based Flue Gas Desulfurization Offers Attractive Alternative to Limestone-Based Systems
Flue gas desulfurization systems using lime or limestone as the chemical reagent are widely used throughout the world for SO2 emissions control at coal-fired power plants. Ammonia-based systems, however, are emerging as a viable alternative to address limitations with respect to liquid and solid waste generation and handling.

Ocean Energy Technology Update
With test sites spread across the Orkney Islands, Scotland, the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) is kick-starting a marine renewables industry and harnessing the power of Europe's enviable wave and tidal resources. To date, more technologies have been tested at EMEC than anywhere else in the world. In fact, there are currently 13 European Union–funded research projects taking place in Orkney, with €65 million invested by an array of European partners.
