FOCUS ON E-NEWSLETTER:
This monthly e-newsletter is sent to a targeted database determined by the subject matter of each technical report. This month’s e-newsletter will cover Process Control & Instrumentation and deploy February 8.

Topic: Personal protective equipment
FEATURE REPORT

Summary:  Operations in chemical processing facilities and laboratories often involve potentially hazardous materials and conditions, so many types of personal protective equipment (PPE) are warranted. This two-part Feature Report investigates two PPE topics. Part 1 looks at the potential issues associated with single-use gloves, as well as potential solutions. Part 2 describes a revised directive on chemical safety clothing in the European Union.

Related equipment:  All types of PPE, including gloves, chemical safety clothing, facemasks, goggles, safety glasses, hardhats, earplugs and so on

Relevant industries:  All chemical process industries (CPI) sectors use PPE

Topic: Distillation
FEATURE REPORTS

Summary: This two-part Feature Report covers two aspects of industrial distillation. Part 1 focuses on the need for experimental validation of distillation column simulations. Although commercial process simulation tools are indispensable for the design and optimization of separation schemes involving distillation columns, the accuracy of their predictions depends highly on the physical property models used in the simulation, and it is not unusual to obtain significantly different simulation results when using different physical property models. Some level of experimental testing is often necessary to validate the simulation results. This article addresses the need for experimental validation of computer-generated simulations of distillation columns, and discusses the main concepts involved with experimental validation. In Part 2, a turndown criterion for bubble cap tray vapor turndown is established. The bubble cap tray has been used extensively on distillation tray equipment worldwide as a highly efficient vapor-liquid contacting device. Many people have examined the maximum capacity of bubble caps, but very few have studied turndown. This article establishes a turndown criterion for bubble cap trays such that the tray designer can maintain efficient operation at the lowest loads.

Related equipment: Distillation columns and internals (trays, packing), simulation software, thermodynamics databases, process control, pumps, valves and heat exchangers

Relevant industries: Distillation is widely used as a separation and purification operation in a number of CPI sectors, including petroleum refining, petrochemicals, chemicals (solvents, such as ethanol), pharmaceuticals and more

Topic: Flow principles
