FOCUS ON E-NEWSLETTER:
This monthly e-newsletter is sent to a targeted database determined by the subject matter of each technical report. This month’s e-newsletter will cover SOLIDS HANDLING  and deploy July 12.

Topic: Maintaining Heat-Transfer Fluid Quality
FEATURE REPORTS

Summary: Organic heat transfer fluids are robust workhorses in the chemical process industries (CPI) that are quite stable, but they can yield to attacks. The best defense against these attacks is to know the strengths of a fluid and how to strategically intervene. This article helps guide heat-system owners on how to successfully resist these attacks and minimize their impacts. Topics include considerations in filling and draining systems, effects of thermal stressing, contamination and more.

Related equipment and services: Heat transfer fluids, heat exchangers, preventive maintenance

Relevant industries: This topic is relevant to all sectors of the CPI where heat exchange is used.

Topic: Flow Measurement & Control
FEATURE REPORTS

Summary: Measuring and controlling the flow of materials is essential in all phases of a chemical process. This two-part Feature Report covers several important aspects of flow measurement. Part 1 discusses the measurement of air and gases, with special focus given to selection of the proper technology and instrumentation for various applications, including flaring and gas blanketing. The article also provides guidance on device calibration and sensitivity, as well as ensuring that processes meet the necessary agency approvals. Part 2 examines the requirements of flow-measurement devices used with extremely dangerous substances. The article includes detailed coverage of a phosgene-handling process and the efforts required to ensure that flowmeters are properly configured to ensure optimal process safety.

Related equipment and services: All types of flowmeters and associated components

Relevant industries: All sectors of the CPI must accurately measure and control flow of materials.

Topic: Urban Mining
NEWSFRONTS

Summary:  As electronic gadgets continue to improve, their predecessors are simply discarded. But this electronics waste contains valuable resources, such as precious metals. This Newsfront will examine the efforts underway and the process technology being developed for recovering such resources from waste, including the products of municipal-waste and sludge incinerators, as well as specialized services targeting electronics waste.

Related equipment and services: Incinerators, process technology (hydrometallurgy, electrochemistry), recycling technology and all the process equipment associated with this

Relevant industries: Metals, minerals, nutrient (phosphorus) recovery

Editorial material for consideration should be sent to senior editor Gerald Ondrey (gondrey@chemengonline.com)

Topic: Predictive Maintenance
NEWSFRONTS

Summary:  Maintenance is an important and necessary requirement for operating any plant in the chemical process industries. With the recent explosion in new digitalization technology, such as Big Data, Artificial Intelligence and the industrial internet of things (IIoT), deciding when to schedule routine shutdowns for performing maintenance tasks is not only becoming more predictable, but even preventable. This equipment Newsfront will present the latest products and trends.

Related equipment and services: Software, sensors, data analytics, databases, cloud services, maintenances services and more

Relevant industries:  All sectors of the CPI can benefit from predictive maintenance.

Editorial material for consideration should be sent to contributing editor Joy LePree (jlepree@chemengonline.com)

Topic: Packaging Materials
FACTS AT YOUR FINGERTIPS

Summary: Compounds used to manufacture packaging for consumer products form a large slice of the chemical industry. This one-page reference will provide information on the properties and applications for several common polymers used in packaging materials.

Related equipment and services: Extrusion equipment, polymerization equipment, other gas-, liquid- and solids-handling equipment

Relevant industries: Plastics, polymers, packaging, food and beverage, pharmaceutical and others

Topic: Acrylonitrile Production from Propylene
TECHNOLOGY PROFILE

Summary: Acrylonitrile is a widely used compound in several industrially important plastics, adhesives and synthetic rubbers, such as polyacrylonitrile, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR), as well as chemicals, such as acrylic acid and acrylamide. This one-page process description outlines the steps needed to manufacture acrylonitrile from propylene.

Related equipment and services:  Fluidized bed reactors, distillation columns and many other types of processing equipment

Relevant industries: Plastics, synthetic rubber, adhesives, synthetic fibers

Topic: Plant Security
FOCUS

Summary:  This product roundup will showcase a variety of products and services that are available to help chemical process operators address physical and cyber threats that can imperil the safety and security of their facilities and their employees. These include diagnostic and monitoring devices, improved surveillance options, modeling and scenario-analysis software, failsafe emergency-shutdown systems and more.

Related equipment and services:   Monitoring devices and systems, alarm systems, failsafe emergency-shutdown systems, data-analytics and scenario-analysis modeling programs

Relevant industries: All sectors of the CPI are concerned with facility security.

Editorial material for consideration should be sent to contributing editor Suzanne Shelley (SuzanneAShelley@yahoo.com).

Topic: Liquid-Gas Coalescers: The Effect of Retrograde Condensation
ENGINEERING PRACTICE

Summary: Retrograde condensation occurs in multi-component natural-gas streams at high pressures. The presence of condensed liquids can negatively impact the performance of liquid-gas coalescer separators and downstream gas-processing operations. This phenomenon will depend on the composition of the gas, the temperature and the pressure. This article discusses several techniques that can be used to evaluate retrograde condensation (both by modeling software and by pilot testing), and profiles several methods to better control liquid separation and improve process operations.

Related equipment and services: Liquid-gas coalescers, separation systems, pressure monitors

Relevant industries: Petroleum refining and natural-gas processing sectors, as well as any chemical process operation handling liquid-gas separations

Topic: Avoiding Safety Pitfalls During Plant Expansion and Modification
ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGER

Summary: For a variety of economic and technical reasons, many CPI plant operators choose to undertake relatively modest expansions or upgrades to existing plants rather than new construction. Plant expansions, debottlenecking and modernization efforts can be an effective way to increase capacity without incurring the higher costs associated with building a new process. However, such projects must be executed carefully to ensure ongoing process and plant safety. Even seemingly minor upgrades can create safety issues if not executed properly. Meanwhile, larger projects may require significant changes to existing plant layouts and complex adjustments that will make them almost as challenging from a safety standpoint as greenfield construction. This article provides practical recommendations and reviews best practices for carrying out a successful plant revamp.

Related equipment and services: All forms of process equipment, including pumps, valves, reactors, boilers, pollution-control systems, piping, process modeling software, control systems, monitoring systems

Relevant industries: All CPI sectors experience plant revamps and modernizing upgrades.

Topic: Drying
SOLIDS PROCESSING

Summary: Drying biosludge in wastewater treatment is complicated by the need to handle the so-called “sticky phase” of drying. Piggybacking on previous work on sludge drying, this article describes methods to define analytically the beginning and ending of the “sticky-phase” zone and discusses drying design schemes based on that information.

Related equipment and services: Dryers, mixer-dryers, wastewater treatment equipment

Relevant industries: Municipal wastewater treatment, solids handling
