COVER FOCUS: Combined Heat and Power

Taking Combined Heat and Power to New Heights
One of the oldest energy efficiency ideas—combined heat and power (CHP)—is prospering in the U.S. and looks promising elsewhere, as the world searches for low-cost energy by increasing efficiency while lowering carbon dioxide emissions. The Department of Energy has established 10 regional CHP technical assistance partnerships to promote and assist in transforming the market for CHP. Meanwhile, the availability of smaller CHP systems is helping grow the solution around the world.

Containerized CHP Unit Guarantees Power and Business Continuity
Managers at the ProCaribe liquefied petroleum gas storage terminal in Puerto Rico wanted to improve efficiency and guarantee a reliable source of power. The solution selected was trigeneration. It included a Siemens containerized SGE-36SM propane-fueled engine and genset, a mixed recovery boiler (engine gases and propane burner) to produce hot water, and an absorption chiller to produce cold water. The plug-and-play solution also ensures business continuity during natural disasters and other unusual events.

FEATURES

Nuclear Power: Fast Reactor Designs
Fast neutron reactor systems have the potential to extract 60 to 70 times more energy from uranium compared to existing thermal reactors, and they contribute to a significant reduction in the burden of radioactive waste. Because they can also be flexible and adaptable, they are often thought of as the holy grail to ensure long-term sustainability of nuclear power. Wide progress has been made of late in many countries that are actively developing the reactors and related fuel cycle technologies. This article will survey commercial, demonstration, prototype, and experimental units around the world and provide a comprehensive discussion on the future of fast reactor technology.

Clear Skies Ahead: The Pursuit of Carbon Capture and Storage
Burning fossil fuels produces carbon dioxide, which is widely believed to be the cause of climate change. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is the process of trapping carbon dioxide and storing it, thus preventing release to the Earth’s atmosphere. CCS is not cheap, but costs are coming down. As they do, the outlook for CCS is bright.

Battery Storage: Technology and Safety
Advances in battery storage technology continue to drive storage costs lower, leading to an increase in the number of both small-scale and utility-scale storage projects. That can be disruptive to power generators that are not embracing storage, as the technology presents opportunities for partial grid defection, in which customers stay connected to the grid for 24/7 reliability but also generate more of their own energy, using storage to optimize their generation. The advances in technology have brought some safety concerns, and government agencies are establishing new standards, code requirements, and certifications as new technologies come online.

Small Gas Turbines Offer Big Efficiency Improvements
There are some highly efficient, small gas turbine options available for industrial companies looking to reduce energy costs and environmental impacts. Many of these turbines can operate in combined heat and power schemes to supply electricity, hot water, steam, and absorption chillers. In some cases, old systems that operated in the 35–40% efficiency range have been replaced with new equipment that is more than 80% efficient. In this article, some of the latest small gas turbine options will be reviewed.

The Latest in Solar Tracking Technology
By some accounts, a solar panel’s output can be increased by 25% to 30% using a single-axis tracking system and by as much as 40% using dual-axis models. But at current prices, that may not be enough to justify the additional costs of adding tracking systems. Yet, prices are likely to decrease in the near future just as other costs have come down for solar technology. This article will review some of the latest advancements and examine how they will ultimately affect the industry.

Measuring High-Purity Water with a General-Purpose pH Sensor
Maintaining proper water quality is critical for protecting boilers and steam turbines. pH is an essential measurement because if it is out of specification scaling, corrosion, system failure, and downtime can result. For high-pressure boilers employing high-purity, low-conductivity water, unique challenges arise that can add costs, compromise accuracy, and threaten effective system operation. This article will describe a strategy whereby a general-purpose pH sensor can be used to measure high-purity water successfully, significantly reducing maintenance and time in the field, reducing water usage, and enhancing ease of use.

Solving Renewable Transmission Constraints with Water Infrastructure
One of the largest hurdles to delivering substantial amounts of renewable energy is transmission constraints. Los Angeles’ current in-basin transmission infrastructure is based largely on delivering power from coastal power plants to city loads. However, renewable energy sources are often far removed from established transmission lines. One solution is delivering renewable power to the coast so existing transmission pathways can be used. Water corridors may be the key.

Equipment Showcase

Diesel and Gas Generators
POWER features a different power-related equipment category in selected issues throughout the year. This month diesel and gas generator equipment will be the focus. If your company would like to submit a product to be considered for free inclusion in the section, send a 150-word write-up to editor@powermag.com with details about the company and product, including a high-resolution image of the equipment and write “March Equipment Showcase” in the subject line.
