This monthly e-newsletter is sent to a targeted database determined by the subject matter of each technical report. This month’s e-newsletter will cover Pumps and deploy March 8.

Topic: Overpressure Protection
FEATURE REPORT

Summary: Many unit operations in the chemical process industries (CPI) involve elevated pressures, so safety relief is an important concern. Part 1 of this Feature Report looks at new developments in calculation methods involving pressure-relief systems, as well as new pressure-relief regulations and in-the-field lessons learned. Part 2 describes a method for sizing pressure-relief valves in situations where two-phase flow is found.

Related equipment and services: Pressure-relief valves, pressure measurement devices, rupture discs, flame suppression systems, rupture-pin valves and other equipment related to pressure safety

Relevant industries: All sectors of the CPI are concerned with pressure measurement and safety.

Topic: Rotating Machinery
FEATURE REPORT

Summary: Compressors and other rotating equipment are used across the CPI and bring with them many unique operating considerations. This two-part Feature Report looks at improvements in the operation, maintenance and design of rotating equipment. Part 1 provides an overview of implementing a predictive maintenance strategy for rotating machinery, highlighting the importance of data analytics and smart sensors in preventing failures and increasing efficiency. Part 2 focuses on the design of air compressors to optimize efficiency and avoid problems with leakage and unwanted pressure drops.  The article also investigates some new monitoring and control schemes and provides guidance to engineers in selecting and installing instrumentation for compressors.

Related equipment and services: All types of compressors, pumps, turbines, motors and other rotating machinery, and associated equipment components, including seals, bearings, monitoring devices and instrumentation, as well as design and analysis tools for rotating machinery

Relevant industries: Compressors, pumps, turbines and motors are used in all CPI sectors, and are especially important in petroleum refineries and petrochemical plants.

Topic: Solar Chemistry
NEWSFRONT

Summary: Technological advances in both photovoltaic solar panels and concentrated solar-thermal power (CSP) plants are slowly bringing down the costs for making electricity from the sun. There is, however, another way to utilize the sun's energy, which is what vegetation has been doing for millions of years — using the sunlight to make chemicals. Although natural photosynthesis is actually not that efficient (approximately 0.1–2% sunlight-to-biomass conversion efficiency), few would argue that the planet's natural plant kingdom does a good job of making chemicals.

This month's Newsfront will look at some of the progress made by efforts targeting the production of chemicals by artificial photosynthesis. Such efforts aim to mimic and improve some or all of the natural photosynthesis paths as a way to make base chemicals, such as hydrogen, synthesis gas (hydrogen and carbon monoxide), methanol, methane, ethylene, and glucose. Ultimately, such efforts will lead to a more sustainable of such chemicals, as well as helping — by utilizing carbon dioxide — to reduce the buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

Related equipment and services: Catalysts, membranes, electrodes and related electrolyzer components, heat exchangers and heat-transfer fluids, and associated process equipment (pumps, valves, control systems and field devices), and more

Relevant industries: Chemicals, fine chemicals, petrochemicals, biotechnology, liquid fuels

Editorial material for consideration should be sent to senior editor Gerald Ondrey ( gondrey@chemengonline.com )

Topic: Filtration
NEWSFRONT

Summary:  Filtration is a common unit operation used throughout the CPI for product recovery and purification, as well as in many environmental applications (from dust collection to sludge dewatering). This month's Equipment Newsfront will present recent trends and new filtration products and technologies.

Related equipment and services: All types of filtration systems, filtration media, and associated process equipment (pumps, valves, pressure transmitters), and so on.

Relevant industries: All CPI sectors use filtration and filtration-related products.

Editorial material for consideration should be sent to contributing editor Joy LePree ( jlepree@chemengonline.com )

Topic: Burning and Combustion
FACTS AT YOUR FINGERTIPS

Summary:  Burner performance is a critical parameter for both process heating and emissions control. This one-page reference will discuss common combustion products and how burner design can affect emissions.

Related equipment and services: Burners, including oxy-fuel burners, low-NOx burners and others, as well as heat exchangers, direct-fired heaters, furnaces, air-pollution control systems, emissions monitoring devices and so on

Relevant industries:  Burners are used for process heating in many CPI sectors, including petroleum refining, chemical manufacturing, power generation, cement making and many others.

Topic: Isopropyl alcohol production
TECHNOLOGY PROFILE

Summary:  This one-page process summary describes the production of isopropyl alcohol from refinery-grade propylene.

Related equipment and services: All types of liquid- and gas-handling process technologies

Relevant industries: Petrochemicals, specialty chemicals, organic chemicals

Focus: Process Control Hardware
FOCUS

Summary: Although hardware does not evolve as rapidly as software, it is safe to say that advances in hardware for process control occur more rapidly than other types of CPI equipment. This month's Focus will highlight a number of new products in process-control hardware that have recently entered the market.

Related equipment and services:  All types of hardware for process control, including controllers, control valves, transmitters (flow, level, pressure, temperature), I/O devices, online analyzers, indicators, and more.

Relevant industries: All sectors of the CPI use process control.

Editorial material for consideration should be sent to senior editor Gerald Ondrey ( gondrey@chemengonline.com )

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGER

Summary: This article describes a revised directive on chemical safety clothing in the European Union, and what it means for PPE and safety in the CPI.

Related equipment and services: All types of PPE, including gloves, chemical safety clothing, facemasks, goggles, safety glasses, hardhats, earplugs and so on

Relevant industries: All CPI sectors use PPE.
