FOCUS ON E-NEWSLETTER:
This monthly e-newsletter is sent to a targeted database determined by the subject matter of each technical report. This month’s e-newsletter will cover Process Control & Instrumentation and deploy February 14.
2019 MEDIA KIT IS NOW AVAILABLE

Topic: Steam
FEATURE REPORTS

Summary: Steam is a critical utility at many chemical process industries (CPI) plants, and a well-designed, well-operated steam system can significantly reduce plant costs. An example of a cost-savings opportunity is a pressurized condensate-return system, which can reduce fuel costs by 15 to 35% compared to a conventional, atmospherically vented condensate system. This article discusses the operation of pressurized condensate-return systems and their potential advantages.
Related equipment and services: All equipment used in steam systems, including boilers, de-aerators, flowmeters, valves, pipes, flanges, gaskets, steam traps, temperature monitors, heat exchangers and more
Relevant industries: Steam systems are common throughout the CPI

Topic: Drones
FEATURE REPORTS

Summary: Unmanned aerial vehicles, also known as aerial drones, provide many promising benefits in industrial facilities for inspection, monitoring and more. However, before introducing drones into an operational site, there are many factors that must be considered to ensure safety and efficiency. This article presents the preparation and uses of a safety-case document for drone deployment and best uses for the technology.
Related equipment and services: Drones and associated equipment, design and project planning software.
Relevant industries:  Any large facility in the CPI can benefit from the use of drones.

Topic: Artificial Intelligence in the CPI
NEWSFRONTS

Summary: Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming more widespread across all industry sectors, and the CPI is seeing increasing adoption of AI technologies for a wide range of applications, from process optimization to research and development to predictive strategies. This article will look at some recent instances of AI’s application by CPI companies.
Related equipment and services: Process simulation and modeling software, data analytics tools, tools and equipment used for predictive analytics or predictive maintenance, laboratory analysis devices
Relevant industries: All sectors of the CPI are becoming increasingly digitalized and may encounter AI technologies.
Editorial material for consideration should be sent to associate editor Mary Page Bailey (mbailey@chemengonline.com)

Topic: Safety & Industrial Housekeeping
NEWSFRONTS

Summary: When it comes to plant safety, engineers should not neglect the somewhat mundane chores of good housekeeping around the plant. This month's Equipment Newsfront will remind readers of these tasks, and also present new technology that is helping to keep plants running safely.
Related equipment and services:  Flooring, paints and coatings, industrial vacuum cleaners and cleaning agents, spill absorbents and containment devices, lighting and so on
Relevant industries: All sectors of the CPI
Editorial material for consideration should be sent to contributing editor Joy LePree (joylepree@gmail.com)

Topic: Pumps
FACTS AT YOUR FINGERTIPS

Summary: The key roles often played by pumps in many processes make sizing and selecting pumps of great importance. This one-page reference provides information on sizing and selection for process pumps.
Related equipment and services: All types of pumps and related equipment, including centrifugal pumps, air-operated, double diaphragm pumps, piston pumps, peristaltic pumps and auxiliary equipment
Relevant industries: Most sectors of the CPI use pumps, including petroleum refining, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, water treatment and more

Topic: Oxygen Production
TECHNOLOGY PROFILE

Summary: Oxygen is among the most common industrial gases in the CPI, and is used in the production of steel, as well as in the production of chemicals such as ethylene oxide and others. This column describes the industrial production of oxygen.
Related equipment and services:  Tanks, vessels, pressure measurement devices, valves, compressors, refrigeration units and more
Relevant industries: Steel manufacturing, chemical production, water treatment, welding, medical, aerospace

Focus: Filtration
FOCUS

Summary:  Filtration is an important unit operation in all sectors of the CPI, where it is used for pretreating water and feedstock, purifying or separating products, as well as for environmental operations and dust control. This month's Focus will present a selection of new products and services for performing filtration.
Related equipment and services:  Filtration systems, filtration media, filtration monitoring systems, differential pressure transmitters, pumps and valves
Relevant industries: All sectors of the CPI
Editorial material for consideration should be sent to senior editor Gerald Ondrey (gondrey@chemengonline.com)

Topic: Air Coolers Versus Shell-and-Tube Water Coolers
ENGINEERING PRACTICE

Summary: For the last 40 years, air-cooled heat exchangers have become an indispensable part of many plants in the CPI. In locations where the availability of cooling water is limited and expensive, air-cooled exchangers may be a preferred choice. However, due to various process constraints, even in such cases, air cooling alone cannot always suffice, and water cooling is also added as cooling medium. Similarly, where cooling water is available in abundance, shell-and-tube coolers are not always a straightforward solution. Due to elaborate cooling-water piping circuits, cooling towers, large cooling-water circulation pumps and water conditioning systems, the complexity and capital requirements for water-cooled exchangers are generally very high, leading to a preference of air coolers over shell-and-tube coolers. This article discusses situations where a combination of both air coolers and water coolers are used in relation to overall project economics, where air-cooling alone is preferred over water-cooling, and where there is no choice but to use water cooling only.
Related equipment and services:  Heat exchangers, heat-transfer fluids, coolers, pumps, valves, control systems, pressure and temperature transmitters, and so on
Relevant industries: Chemicals, petroleum refining, petrochemicals, gas processing, power plants and more
