Topic: Corrosion
FEATURE REPORTS

Summary: Corrosion is one of the most pervasive and versatile challenges faced in the chemical process industries (CPI). It can be difficult to effectively identify and quantify the degree of damage caused by corrosion, especially in insulated equipment. Part 1 of this two-part Feature Report looks at corrosion under insulation (CUI) and provides guidance on the application of non-destructive examination techniques to tackle the effects of CUI. Part 2 discusses how corrosion-monitoring process data can be used alongside traditional inspection and measurement techniques to develop more proactive corrosion-management strategies.
Related equipment and services: All types of process equipment; Equipment used for non-destructive inspection, including ultrasonic instrumentation, guided-wave radar devices, radiography and more; Corrosion monitoring sensors and associated technologies
Relevant industries: Corrosion is a concern throughout the CPI

Topic: Process Safety
FEATURE REPORTS

Summary: In CPI plants, there is often a hybrid control system, consisting of a distributed control system (DCS), multiple programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system with remote controllers, as well as safety instrumented systems (SIS). Because of this, there has been a need for a unified operation and monitoring environment to ensure safety, security and high availability. A unified operation and monitoring environment permits the operator to operate and monitor the controllers on the same screen, despite the differences between types and brands of controllers. The concept of a unified gateway station is described in Part 1 of this month’s Feature Report for process plants and facilities needing to integrate many subsystems into a unified system. Part 2 will cover the importance of maintaining SIS technologies with regard to industry codes, standards and regulations.
Related equipment and services: Automation and control systems; Safety instrumented systems, which includes all types of field devices and automation and control systems
Relevant industries:  Petroleum refining, bulk chemicals, petrochemicals and any other large-scale facilities dealing with SIS

Topic: Plastics Recycling
NEWSFRONTS

Summary: A number of hurdles, including contamination in mixed plastic streams, have prevented the widespread and profitable recycling of plastics, especially single-use plastic packaging. A number of companies are developing chemical-based recycling approaches that are designed to address some of the current difficulties of plastic recycling processes. This Newsfront will describe some of the new approaches that are being scaled up.
Related equipment and services: Mills, grinders and size-reduction equipment, tanks, piping and other equipment for solvent-based processes, reactors, any equipment related to recycling processes
Relevant industries: Recycling, plastic production, waste management, chemicals, food and beverage, plastic packaging and films, catalysts
Editorial material for consideration should be sent to senior editor Scott Jenkins (sjenkins@chemengonline.com)

Topic: Flow Measurement & Control
NEWSFRONTS

Summary: Together with temperature, pressure and level, flow is one of the key process parameters that needs to be measured, monitored and controlled. This month's Equipment Newsfront presents the latest trends and technology developments related to flow measurement and control.
Related equipment and services:  All types of flowmeters, transmitters and associated equipment
Relevant industries: All sectors of the CPI
Editorial material for consideration should be sent to contributing editor Joy LePree (joylepree@gmail.com)

Topic: Hygienic Processing
FACTS AT YOUR FINGERTIPS

Summary: Proper fabrication and assembly of equipment for hygienic processes require adherence to quality-assurance procedures designed to prevent contamination and bacteria growth once the process is operational. This one-page reference provides information on key considerations for quality assurance in setting up hygienic processes.
Related equipment and services: All equipment designed for aseptic processes, such as stainless-steel tanks, pipes, valves, sensors, gaskets, and others
Relevant industries: Pharmaceutical manufacturing, bio-based chemicals, brewing, wine-making, biopharmaceutical, food and beverage
